Hive Group is seeking a Product Engineer to join our team in support of an existing program. This role combines hands-on product ownership with full-stack application development, process automation, and data engineering. The Product Engineer will work directly with Business Intelligence (BI) leadership, senior engineers, operations stakeholders, and federal users to stabilize, enhance, and extend a portfolio of internal applications, automations, datasets, and workflow tools that support the client’s mission.

This is a delivery role for a systems-thinker who can leverage a diverse toolset, , improve the integrity of underlying data , and bridge the gap between product development and business outcomes and  transform  siloed efforts  into shared, maintainable, and well documented products.

This position is a hybrid position with the requirement to report onsite 2 days per week 

Key Responsibilities

  • Own development and delivery of data products end-to-end: run requirements intake with clients, translate business needs into user stories and acceptance criteria, maintain a prioritized backlog, coordinate UAT, support release planning and manage stakeholder communication through ongoing maintenance and future iterations.
  • Build, maintain, and enhance automated solutions and applications within a secured ecosystem.
  • Build and improve ETLs and data pipelines between source systems, exports, APIs, spreadsheets, and applications.
  • Design reusable components and modular services, including: permissions, notifications, file handling, configurable forms, audit/change tracking, and shared utilities.
  • Create and maintain user guides, SOPs, technical runbooks, and developer-facing documentation that enable continuity, cross-training, and backup support.
  • Partner with senior engineers and BI/Data leadership to align product decisions that drive modernization towards reusability of tools, stronger governance, and more scalable delivery.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience building and sustaining internal applications, automation solutions, workflow tools, or analytics products in a direct client delivery environment.
  • Clearance: Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust Clearance
  • Hands-on experience in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (or similar language) building user-facing applications and automation in Google Workspace environments.
  • Experience in Databricks, or a comparable environment, for developing pipelines, integrating AI-enabled capabilities, and building operational tools and workflows.
  • Working knowledge of SQL and data structures, with the ability to reason through schemas, joins, validation logic, and data quality issues.
  • Experience using version control and structured engineering workflows, including Git/GitHub; familiarity with VS Code and CLASP strongly preferred.
  • Strong analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve production issues with urgency and discipline, balancing immediate user needs with root-cause analysis and longer-term fixes
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical topics to non-technical stakeholders and maintain alignment across users, federal leadership, other contract SMEs/teams, and peers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated understanding of federal acquisition processes, government systems and ability to integrate deeply into constrained data environments.
  • Experience with Python, Jupyter notebooks, PostgreSQL / pgAdmin or similar tools used for ETL, validation, or data engineering.
  • Experience with service accounts, authentication patterns, scheduling constraints, or deployment considerations within client-approved environments.
  • Experience designing modular application architectures, role-based permissions, reusable libraries, or configurable workflows for internal products.
  • Experience modernizing spreadsheet-heavy processes into more durable tools, automations, or governed datasets.
  • Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools to accelerate iteration while maintaining quality, security, and human-in-the-loop review.

Compensation and Benefits

The estimated compensation range for this position is between $115,000 and $135,000 annually, based on benchmarks in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. This range reflects a good faith estimate for all experience levels.
